What is the most popular activity in Waikiki? Surfing the waves of Waikiki has to be one of the most romanticized sports of all time. There is nothing more Hawaiian than surfing the beaches of Waikiki. Waikiki is also one of the best places in the world to take surf lessons on a stand up paddle board or a standard surfboard. The waves are usually warm, consistant and forgiving which makes them perfect for the first time surfer.

The history of surfing in Hawaii goes back hundreds of years. For a brief period misguided (or worse) western missionaries all but stamped out surfing because they thought it was hedonistic. Grade A kooks, those missionaries. Thankfully, King Kalakaua restored the Hawaiian the great tradition of surfing in the late 1800′s. By the early 1900′s surfing had returned in all it’s glory and given a huge boost by world class watermen like Duke Kahanamoku. Duke grew up surfing the south shore swell and was known as a Waikiki Beach Boy. True to his aloha spirit, he freely gave surf lessons in Waikiki to people visiting the island. These same Waikiki beach boys used to stand on their long boards, and paddle out with outrigger paddles. That was the beginnings of stand up paddle in Waikiki and has grown huge in popularity over the past 10 years. Stand up paddling is the hottest water sports for several years running and taking stand up paddle lessons in Waikiki is something everyone should do.
